The Oracle certification scheme has been around for many years now, but is it just a means for Oracle to sell more of their training courses or is there any benefit? Well, let's see. Oracle's 2012 salary survey found that over 80% of Oracle Certified individuals reported a promotion, salary/benefits increase or other career improvements as a result of becoming certified and Oracle’s own survey of graduates of their Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) program reported that:- • over 90% said their job prospects had improved due to having Oracle certification • 82% said their earning power had increased • 89% said they gained more confidence in their Oracle expertise after becoming certified This seems to be confirmed by independent studies:- • the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) DBA certification was ranked in the Top Ten most Valuable Credentials by CRN.com in 2002 • Certification magazine found that Oracle Certified Professionals had the highest average salary and along with Compaq Certified Professionals headed the list for receiving the biggest increase in salary as a result of obtaining certification • the “Robert Half Technology 2010 Salary Guide” found that having certification can increase starting salary by up to 10 percent There is also evidence that it benefits companies to use certified staff. Research by International Data Corporation ("Benefits and Productivity Gains Realized Through IT Certification," International Data Corporation) found that: • certified professionals handled 40% more support calls per person, per day, than uncertified staff • companies that advocated certification reported 49% less downtime than those that did not • the costs of certification were repaid in fewer than nine months by the savings from increased effectiveness in the majority of companies surveyed In summary, gaining Oracle Certification can be a real career boost as most Oracle Certified Professionals have found that their investment in training and certification is quickly repaid by gains in salary, job opportunities, or expanded roles.
